Is calling an internal or an external thing? Meaning do you regard it as something God asks of you, or is it something you choose to do? I guess the two are not exclusive, but I'm wondering if you have a different name for something God asks of you and something you feel compelled to do?
My answer:
Hi Arch,
The calling I feel in my heart, and 'know' in my soul, is a very internal reaction. It is based in calmness, peace and healing (though, having ego, I might not always react that way). All of us were created through the energy of love and curiosity. In other words, we appear to mirror our creator. Given the right circumstances, humans are capable of incredible Love; and when we are of a balanced mind and emotions, we become incredibly creative .. in a million different ways.
Created from love, we express love (give out the vibes/energy) when we are happy and satisfied, and the opposite when we are not. When we 'live' our calling, we share that love with the world in many forms, some more obvious than others. If you are Christian you might call it God's love; the Wiccans see the Goddess' love .. and then there is the 'wisdom' of Buddha or Confuscius, each of whom taught love in different ways. Here, then, is a very stong central theme .. Love.
A calling is something that satisfies our internal need to give love through external action. A person called to serve God might do so by praying all their waking hours. The act of praying answers an internal need, the external action might answer someone else's need to believe that people are capable of sacrificing their lives in prayer for others, or some other way, although they might also think them completely nuts. The Love the praying person is expressing through their prayers may change the foundations of the world, or a grieving person's heart .. and we might never know it, and nor might the person praying .. but change happens anyway. Remember the comment about the butterfly.
We were created with the gift of free will. We have the right to say no, and to control our own destinys, so I do not believe that God has asked me to do anything except be myself. I try to serve humanity in the capacity I was created to achieve. I know this from the peace it gives my soul. It is my choice to listen to the 'still quiet voice' that sometimes says 'write this' and sometimes says 'Ama, sit on your hands' (in other words, reconsider that paragraph or thought LOL). I follow because I want to, I am never 'compelled'.
In my opinion, a person may define God as anything they like, as long as they are at peace with their decision. My son says he is a Jedi .. that's fine with me.

Love is a danger of a different kind ...
.
Good morning, anyone else love Eurythmics? I am singing the song to myself even now, having started it in the orchard as I wandered down a row of those glorious trees, covered in tiny apples (well, about half the size they will be in a month or two), and I was thinking about hate.
How's that for a subject! Hate. Why do we hate? Why do we bother? Dear God, why do we do it?
Really, the whole thought came up because I was thinking of the word 'God' and 'Spirit'. It can make both sides of the 'religious' bunch blanche. The Christians (and I'm a believer, just in case you are wondering) can't bare the word 'Spirit', used by the new age folk for God. And the new agers .. don't use 'God' because .. because why? Because the Christians do and they don't believe in that 'stuff'. Because its not specific enough?
"Which God do you mean exactly? I follow Isis." Yes, that has been said to me. I even ask the question of people when they come out with some truly outrageous statements that are supposed to be Christian .. like "I hate him!"
I don't remember God or Jesus teaching us to hate .. but then again, go and check out the Old Testament. There's one heck of a judgmental 'god' in there, known as 'the Lord' .. and then there's the other loving one .. and then there's a whole lot more of them - so which God do you follow?
And then there's the Holy Spirit - guess what guys .. new age folks .. and I've worked among them for years and years .. your 'Spirit' is the Holy Spirit .. someone just left off the first word. It's all the same energy .. you keep telling me that, and yet you then isolate bits of it and name them 'Gods'. Sigh ..
Where was I? Oh yes, hate.
Sadly, we are all more than capable of hating. Even the sweetest person you have ever met has a touch of hate in them, or they wouldn't be on this planet. The 'I've come only to serve others' sugarbabies make me blanche (that means go white in the face and want to groan BTW). All of us are here in physical bodies because we have work to do on ourselves - poke a sugarbaby and they are equally capable of lashing out when they are hurt. Believe me .. I've been on the receiving end. We don't intend to hurt them, we just remind them of their issues. I say 'we' because, although its me talking, its often their angels, or mine, who are directing where the conversations go.
Hate comes from fear. Hate is not the opposite of Love. Hate is what happens when we no longer trust, either another person, or ourselves. It is part of wounded pride and ego trying to restore integrity within us. It's version of integrity anyway, which is not always good for us. We should try not to feel that way (ahh.. the should word .. well, in this case, its appropriate). Hate destroys us from the inside, just as unexpressed anger, jealousy, guilt and all the other 'acid' emotions do. They burn away within us creating illnesses such as cancer and others (see Annette Noontil and Louise Hay for the connection between emotion and illness - fascinating .. and true).
Hate is the weapon we use first on ourselves, before we broadcast it not only at the person we are angry with, but also at everyone around us. It poisons the air around us, the food we eat, the water .. our friends, our family, our pets. Please tell me .. why do you hate?
No one deserves this sort of punishment. Not you, not me. Not whomever did whatever it was they did to you .. no matter what it was.
There's a belief among the spiritual folk that we create our reality and that everything that happens to us 1) happens because we chose it for the lessons, and 2) happens for a very good reason. One of the main reasons negative stuff happens is to help us to learn to love UNCONDITIONALLY. I typed that in capitals .. yes, I'm shouting. Should I type LOVE that way too?

Through love we open ourselves to receive so much good, and when the someone who the focus of that emotion cannot give back what we want them to .. for whatever reasons .. we can choose to 'love anyway' and let go, or we can drag them to us and hold them there forever by hating them. It is ropes of steel that bind us to the person we hate .. and they might never know it, and you might never meet them again .. but you are still bound to them, in the time and place where you chose to hate.
I do not want to be trapped in a time of great pain and loneliness, so when I was given a choice to love anyway, I fought to choose it. I fought my own anger, fear and loneliness, all reactions of ego based in pride, and in the end I let go .. oh it took time, but I made the choice and kept working on it each day until the whole issue didn't hurt anymore. I am very grateful for the lessons to those people involved. I learned so much about myself, how can I bear you any ill will?
Do not hate. Do not choose to destroy yourself and everyone around you through that negativity. The planet suffers enough with our stupidity. Do not make it suffer more. Confront the reality of your emotional attachment to those people you are angry with, forgive yourself, forgive them and let go. So much more than you will be healed. And we need that healing now.

How can I Pray and be Heard by God?
Would you like to Know the Truth (part 4)
How can we possibly not be? God is everywhere. God created all things. God is in all things. If God is in ‘all’ things, so then God is in, and within, us. Since God created ‘all’ things, s/he created atheists and people with other belief systems. Since God created all things, then God created other belief systems and other ways of coming ‘Home’ to the source energy that is in ‘all’ of us .. in other words, God.
So why is there separation? Separation begins with us, with our lack of belief, or faith (which are two different things). When we doubt we put a barrier between us and God. That barrier is our free will. Because we were granted it back at our creation, and because it was restored to us by Christ at the Crucifixion, (after we had so foolishly given it away to the ‘devil’ .. see the story of Adam and Eve as a metaphor for our choices ...) we have the power to stop God from helping us, to remove his/her ability to give to us what we most want – Love.
Sometimes our prayers are not answered, or seem not to be. There is a saying “be careful what you ask for, you might get it”. God in his/her infinite wisdom does not always give us what we want, because s/he knows that spiritually most of us are like small children demanding sweets. We try to bargain (if you do this, I will do that) and what we bargain for may well not be what is for our greatest good, and so we are not given what we seek. And God knows that we don’t always understand, at the time, why this is so, nor do we all understand about free will, but s/he doesn’t punish us when we become angry and despondent ... no, s/he loves us anyway, whole heartedly, unconditionally, knowing that we will understand one day – and that day might be the last of this lifetime, or it might be tomorrow.
So praying to God is important because it takes down the barrier between us and him/her, and tells God what we want, and, if we get it right, gives God permission to help us. It also tells God that we are listening when s/he speaks, and that we are grateful for all the good that comes our way each day, and accepting of the challenges that also are part of our lives.
The brochure says that for God to listen to us we have to pray in ways that s/he approves of. That seems a bit of a conundrum, given that first we have to learn God’s will, and then pray accordingly. How do we first learn God’s will? We can find lessons throughout the New Testament in the words of Jesus Christ. Love one another, be honest, truthful and kind. And the Watchtower quotes 1 John 5:14, which says “And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us”. So be bold, be truthful, be trusting, be loving .. and just Be .. a daughter or son of God, a spiritual being in the material world.
Do you remember to say thank you when you pray? Gratitude is incredibly important. Or do you mouth rituals without thought for what the words mean? I agree with the Watchtower brochure here – do not just mouth prayers that you know without putting your heart and soul into the words. (Matthew 6:7-8) Keep it simple. Make it obvious. The Lord ’s Prayer in Matthew is lovely, to begin with –

Sometimes I do feel unworthy of being the crumbs beneath his/her table, but most of the time I know that God seems me as s/he created me ... a perfect ‘likeness’. The imperfections are my own beliefs and attitudes that put the barrier up between what I want from God and what s/he wants from me. Just how thick is your barrier?

Would you like to know the Truth?
That is a very good title. Yes, I would like to know the ‘truth’ about a whole lot of things that have puzzled me in my life. I won’t bore you with my list, I am sure you have your own. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t wonder about the ‘truth’ of God and the Bible. I knew at 17 that I wanted to be a theologian, even if only an informal one, and I did complete a year and a half of a Bachelor of Theology Degree at St Marks Anglican College in Canberra Australia before financial reasons made me give it up (I couldn’t drive a taxi for 16 hours a day and sleep and study with any intelligence). I regret stopping studying, although at the time it was just another load off my back. Now, when life is simpler I know I don’t have the academic ability to go back, but I am still fascinated by it all, still own all the books and study guides and weblinks I found over the time, and I still dip into the wonder and mystery of it all, and the daftness and nonsense.
Daftness and nonsense are not the subjects for today, although mistranslation does sometimes come under that subject heading. It is amazing what we can make the Bible do with just a touch of a twist, or play on words, and presto! it can say whatever you want.
Why do we do that? How does that help with the search on the subject of God? Why does God put up with the mistranslations? He (and she) must have tremendous faith in us to let us get away with the type of rubbish we can come up with when we try. S/he knows we all return to the same source eventually. I am working at not making too many detours. :-)
Back to the title.
While I was out one day the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania dropped a brochure through our dog door. You guessed it. “Would you like to know the Truth?” Since I am fascinated by all peoples’, and groups’, belief systems, I don’t automatically put them in the bin. Instead I sit down and read them through, and look up all the bible quotes they suggest, and really think about what they believe. The ‘how?’ comes later. So this brochure had me questioning their questions – does God really care about us? Will war and suffering ever end? What happens to us when we die? Is there any hope for the dead? (Given the last question I am not sure I want to know what they think is the answer. :-) ) How can I pray and be heard by God? How can I find happiness in this life? Very good questions. Then they go on – “Where would you look for answer to these questions? If you went to libraries or bookstores, you might find thousands of books claiming to provide the answers. Often, though, one book contradicts another” .. etc. Very true. To them there is only one book that contains reliable answers – their Holy Bible.
Now I say ‘their’ because their book is a different translation to mine. I know this, because I have looked their quotes up.
One of the benefits of going to university is that they tried very hard to give us accurate information, including the most up-to-date translation of the Bible, from the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. Mine includes the Apocrypha. (In this case (2007) The New Oxford Annotated Bible (3rd edition), copyright 2001, Oxford University Press, Inc). And then there are the 11 other bibles, all Christian, that I own that I use to check quotes, including the Interlinear Bible which has the Old and New Testament in Hebrew and Greek words, as well as the English translation, so you can check sentence structure, etc. I guess you can see I am serious on the subject. And so I dipped into the Watchtower brochure looking for their answers to their questions and found these:
Does God Really Care about Us?
The brochure said - God never causes what is wicked. “Far be it from the true God to act wickedly, and the Almighty to act unjustly!” (Job 34:10) I don’t think Saul would agree though, having been tormented by an evil spirit from the Lord .. the Lord being Jehovah. He chose to punish Saul because Saul did not obey Samael, his prophet, totally and completely. Saul killed all the Amalekites but kept the best of the sheep, cattle, fatlings and lambs alive. At the time he also spared Agag, the King, but later killed him. Was wanting to feed his people an act against God? God wanted the Amalekites killed because they had opposed the Israelites when they came out of Egypt. (1 Sam 15:2) Just how bad was the opposition that S/He commanded all the people, including children killed? What sort of God does that? Is that a just act? Why aren’t we all condemned now because the Israelites still suffer .. oh, I forgot, they are no longer God’s chosen people.
Given this example from the Old Testament I would have to say that the ‘Lord’, aka Jehovah, doesn’t really seem to care about us, certainly not if we defy Him/Her and go our own way. But wait .. how come we aren’t all dead, or in hell (and that’s another subject), because people defy God constantly in our society? Maybe the answer is back in the brochure. Let’s look at their quote.

True God? Which is the true God? If you dip into the Interlinear you will find that God has any number of names. The one dealing with Saul is called YHWH, Jehovah is a bad translation of those consonants, the other is simply called El. When Jesus prayed to God he prayed to El. So the Watchtower people called our attention to the true God and said he never caused wickedness, but killing your own people, in our society’s estimation is definitely wicked. What was the name of that God .. oh yes, Jehovah. And as one of the lady’s told me in person a few weeks ago, their true God is Jehovah. Given His actions with Saul, and on other occasions, I think I would rather go with El.

The one dealing with Saul is called YHWH, Jehovah is a bad translation of those consonants, the other is simply called El. When Jesus prayed to God he prayed to El. So the Watchtower people called our attention to the true God and said he never caused wickedness, but killing your own people, in our society’s estimation is definitely wicked. What was the name of that God .. oh yes, Jehovah. And as one of the lady’s told me in person a few weeks ago, their true God is Jehovah. Given His actions with Saul, and on other occasions, I think I would rather go with El.

The Last Song
What is the last song you want to be heard singing? The one that expresses the joy in your heart, or the one that sings of your sorrow? I often get 'brain-runners', you know - when the music won't go away, and that same song, or track of thought, goes around and around until you get very tired of it, and are prepared to do pretty much anything to 'change tune'.
Does it really matter if you sing out of tune? You might not do well in a band, but in a choir of like-minded people, you could add a 'happy noise', just as everyone else is doing as they think their daily thoughts, and express their feelings through their own personal music and words. Even a bumble bee makes music that pleases 'Spirit', for it is expressing its true self through the waves of energy that it produces with each movement. And that is what we do - express the waves of our true selves through our thoughts, feelings and actions.
When was the last time you asked for help from 'upstairs' for a problem? Do you do it regularly - or is it the last place you would look for help on any problem? Making it the 'first' place can be a useful solution - you will be amazed with the number of opportunities that come from asking for help.
Now if you are a formal person, you can try a little prayer. You know the type - getting down on your knees and 'begging' for it - but if you want to change the 'tune' a little, how about standing in the sunshine, or the rain, and just directing your thoughts 'upwards' or 'outwards' wherever you think God/Spirit might be. You'll find an aspect of your angels and guides beside you at all times, listening and waiting to help with requests. When you decide to connect to them, to work with them and to ask for help, they leap willingly into every challenge and act with Joy - a little of which will rub off on you, if you allow it.
I was going to write to you about the power of prayer to change our lives, but I think I really should be writing about dancing. Dancing is not that formal stuff we do in ballroom, or the gyrating that our kids get up to. It is the movement we make in our daily lives that leads to all our experiences. We dance, or our energy does, up and down through our chakras, threading in and out through our middles, and weaving patterns in the air that we can 'read' and sense - our auric fields. When these get clogged or cloudy, we feel clogged and cloudy. A little gentle raking (running your fingers down the energy about 3 inches away from your body, back, front, above your head and beneath your feet) can help alleviate the problem, but not remove it entirely, for it is created by our thoughts and emotions, and needs a little more focussed cleaning from time to time. When your energy is clogged, and bogged and you feel down and out, then a more serious healing might be necessary, but a little Reiki once in a while is enough to keep the energy moving.
Why do I talk about Reiki and auras - because they, too, produce their own music, and it is this music that can make your heart dance, and bring Joy back into your step. When you are feeling sick you go to a doctor, and that can be very wise, but it can be equally wise to add a touch of Spiritual Healing to your choices - for it works on the mind, body and Spiritual levels of each person, and that can help, no matter what the problems may be.
Back to dancing, back to music - when was the last time you sang in the shower? When was the last time you imagined that the water was 'washing through you', rather than over you. Use your imagination - allow the water to wash 'through your energy' and lighten the load you carry. Do this each morning and by the end of the week, you might find you feel a little lighter. Take a moment to do this when you wash your hair - it won't take any more time than that normal activity - but choose to do the cleansing daily - you want to feel that full benefit. When you are ready change happens, and you find yourself feeling lighter and brighter. It is really up to you.
Let your last song be the first song of each morning, giving thanks and glory to Spirit for your life, every moment of it.
